Obituary

Vilma V. (Avinelli) Winn, 87, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on March 14, 1939, in Boston's North End, Vilma was one of four daughters of the late Corrado and Virginia (Mizzoni) Avinelli. She spent her early years in the North End before moving to Medford and later settling in Burlington, where she raised her family and created a home that became the heart of countless family gatherings. She shared five beloved children with John Winn Jr., the father of her children, and together they built a family that remained the center of her life. Throughout her life, she shared an especially close bond with her mother and sisters, a connection that remained one of her greatest treasures.

For more than 30 years, Vilma worked as a waitress at Howard Johnson's and later Marriott. She genuinely loved her work and the many friendships she formed over the years. Her warm smile, outgoing personality, and caring nature left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Family was the center of Vilma's life. A devoted mother, she offered unwavering love, guidance, and support to her children through every stage of life. Guided by her deep faith, she instilled strong values, compassion, and the importance of family in those she loved.

Vilma was known for her vibrant spirit, quick wit, and legendary sense of humor. To her family, she was the undisputed "Queen of April Fools," delighting in pranks that kept generations laughing year after year. She brought that same joy and enthusiasm to every holiday, decorating her home beautifully, dressing in elaborate Halloween costumes, and making Christmas especially magical with thoughtful gifts and cherished traditions.

An exceptional Italian cook, Vilma carried on treasured family recipes passed down from her mother. Her homemade gnocchi, ravioli, and countless other favorites became staples of family celebrations. Summer cookouts, holiday feasts, and spontaneous gatherings around her table created memories that will be cherished for generations.

Vilma's generosity knew no bounds. Her home and heart were always open to anyone in need. Whether offering a place to stay, a listening ear, or thoughtful advice, she had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, understood, and loved. Her kindness, empathy, and nonjudgmental nature drew people to her throughout her life.

She also enjoyed cards, trips to the casino, music from the 1950s and 1960s, beach days, and spending time with those she loved. For 27 years, she shared a loving and adventurous relationship with Allan Roderick. Together they enjoyed traveling, exploring new places, and creating countless happy memories.

As a grandmother and great-grandmother, Vilma embraced every moment with joy. She delighted in creating special adventures for her grandchildren, from day trips to memorable "sleepovers" complete with swimming and ice cream sundaes. Her greatest happiness came from being surrounded by family.

Vilma will be remembered for her boundless love, generous spirit, infectious laughter, fierce loyalty, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. Her legacy of kindness, faith, humor, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

She is survived by her beloved children, John Winn III and his wife Ann of Chelmsford, Laurie Roderick of San Diego, Michael Winn of Burlington, Paula Winn of Woburn, and Janice Veilleux and her husband Joseph of Cary, North Carolina; her cherished grandchildren, Brian, Brittany, and Caroline Winn, Christina Hanlon, Daniel, Michael, and Matthew Roderick, Ashley Fitzgerald, and Jake, Nick, Sophia, and Luke Veilleux; and her beloved great-grandchildren.

Vilma was predeceased by her sisters, Elsie, Joan, and Dotty; by Allan Roderick, her devoted companion of 27 years; and by her beloved son-in-law, Alan Roderick, whom she loved dearly and considered one of her own.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Vilma's life on Friday, June 12, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 59 Lexington Street, Burlington. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Vilma's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The family would love to hear your favorite Vilma stories and memories. Whether it was a laugh you shared, a meal around her table, one of her famous April Fools' pranks, or a moment when her kindness touched your life, these memories are a treasured gift and a wonderful way to celebrate the joy and love she brought to so many.
