Mary Gallagher, 96, of Haverhill, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 30th. She was born in Dorchester and raised in Boston, where she attended the local schools. From an early age, Mary learned the importance of family and the meaning of responsibility. After the passing of her mother at a young age, Mary stepped into a more motherly role for her four younger siblings. She cared for them, guided them, and loved them deeply, forming bonds that would remain among the most important relationships of her life.

It was on a blind date that Mary met the love of her life, Thomas M. Gallagher. She was immediately taken by his dashingly good looks, and that first meeting would be the beginning of a wonderful life together. Mary and Tom built a loving home and a life centered around family. Their marriage was filled with countless memories, laughter, and the kind of companionship that comes from sharing a lifetime together.

Mary absolutely adored her family and was happiest when she could have everyone gathered together in one place. She would do just about anything to make a family gathering happen. Whether it meant cooking a feast, opening her home to everyone, getting behind the wheel to pick someone up, or simply making sure that everyone had what they needed, Mary was always willing to do her part. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome, loved, and at home. For Mary, family was not simply important, it was everything.

Mary and Tom spent a period of their married life in Florida before eventually returning to New England. Following Tom’s passing, Mary moved to Haverhill to be closer to her daughter. It was there that Mary truly spread her wings as a social butterfly. She embraced her new community with enthusiasm and quickly became a familiar and beloved presence throughout the area. Affectionately known as “Mae,” she developed many friendships and enjoyed being involved with her neighbors and community.

Mary became especially active at the Plaistow Senior Center, where she enjoyed the companionship and camaraderie of those around her. She also became an important part of the community at Saint Luke the Evangelist Church, helping with numerous church bazaars and lending her time and energy whenever she could. Mary had a wonderful gift for making friends wherever she went, and her warm personality, quick smile, and genuine interest in others made her someone people were always happy to see.

Despite her busy social calendar and her love of being surrounded by others, Mary was happiest and most relaxed in the comfort of her own home. At the end of a busy day, she enjoyed settling in and unwinding with a small bourbon, a simple pleasure that perfectly suited her independent and spirited personality.

Mary Gallagher was truly a wonderful lady. She was a devoted wife, a loving sister, a cherished mother and grandmother, and a dear friend to so many. She gave generously of herself throughout her long life, always putting family and others before herself. Her greatest legacy will be the love she gave so freely and the many people who were made happier simply because Mary “Mae” was part of their lives.

After a long and beautiful life, Mary is now reunited with her beloved husband, Tom, her beloved grandson, Ronald Desrocher Jr. her four younger siblings, who she loved and cared for so deeply throughout her life, Jack, Pat, James and Kay

She is survived by her loving daughter, Susan Desrocher and her husband Ronald of Haverhill, and a grandson Brian Desrocher of Haverhill, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her visiting hours on Thursday from 8:30am to 9:30am at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St. Burlington, her Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10am in Saint Veronicas Parish, at Saint Margarets Church, 111 Winn St. Burlington. Burial will follow in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.
