Gerald J. Laffey, 78, of Billerica and formerly a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on June 29, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Lowell, Jerry was the beloved son of the late Gerald J. and Margaret (Ryan) Laffey. He was raised in Lowell and graduated from Lowell High School, where he distinguished himself as a gifted athlete. A standout on the football field, Jerry earned All-State honors and was presented with the prestigious Unsung Hero Award twice, a fitting recognition for someone whose character and dedication often spoke louder than words.
Following high school, Jerry built a successful career in the chemical manufacturing industry, spending many years as a chemical plant manager specializing in the epoxy and adhesives fields. His leadership, knowledge, and strong work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues throughout his career. It was while working at Amicon that Jerry met the love of his life, Linda Lord. The two dated and were married on November 9, 1974. Together they shared more than five decades of love, friendship, and unwavering commitment, and would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this November.
A man of few words, Jerry never sought attention or recognition. Instead, he quietly demonstrated his love through his actions. He was the kind of person who would drop everything to help someone in need without expecting anything in return. Those fortunate enough to know him well, appreciated his wonderfully dry & sarcastic sense of humor, which emerged once his quiet exterior gave way to friendship.
Outside of work, Jerry found great enjoyment hanging out with his many friends at VFW Post 3719 in Winchester, where he was well known for his years of tending & managing bar. He treasured the friendships he built there and was respected by everyone who knew him.
Sports were a lifelong passion. A naturally gifted athlete in his younger years, Jerry enjoyed playing both football and baseball continuing his joy of sports playing hockey and Softball in his adult years. He was a devoted Boston sports fan, who could watch the game amid all the boisterous conversations his family would have around him.
Jerry's greatest joy was always his family. His children were the center of his world, and some of his fondest memories were made during the family's annual summers at Pine Acres Campground. It was there, he and his family made countless lifelong friendships. He participated in many activities there including horseshoes, swimming, beach parties and dancing at the weekly dances where Jerry would “teach you, teach you, teach you, teach you the electric slide”.
Jerry and Linda shared a love of traveling and created countless cherished memories together aboard cruise ships. They were fortunate to take two or three cruises each year, exploring destinations throughout Europe, the South Pacific, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and many other destinations. Whether discovering a new city or relaxing on deck together, those adventures became some of the happiest moments of their marriage.
One of Jerry's greatest joys in life was being a grandfather. He adored each of his grandchildren and cherished every opportunity to spend time with them, whether it was sharing stories, playing games, or simply enjoying cookouts. He lovingly honored the name they gave him, "Grumpy". With his reserved demeanor and serious expression, Jerry had a rough tough demeanor on the outside, but those who knew him best understood beneath that tough exterior was a kind, patient, and incredibly loving man whose heart belonged to his family & friends.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and provider, Jerry devoted himself to ensuring his family always had what they needed. He believed in working hard, living within his means, and always preparing for life's unexpected challenges. His frugal nature was never about doing without, it was about making sure those he loved were secure. The values of responsibility, planning ahead, and caring for family were lessons he passed down to his children by both word and example.
Jerry also enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He could often be found relaxing with a cold Heineken in hand, surrounded by family or good friends, sharing quiet conversation and enjoying the company of those he loved most.
Jerry was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Laffey.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Linda (Lord) Laffey of Billerica (formally of Belmont), their children, Matthew Laffey and his wife Lauren of Wakefield, MA., Jaime Isaac and her husband Irwin of Listuguj, Quebec Canada, and Kristin Laffey of Billerica, additionally by his children Steven Laffey and his wife Christie of Merritt Island, Florida, Laurie Rowe and her husband Ken also of Merritt Island, Florida, siblings, Patrick Laffey and his wife Terry of Lowell, and Lisa Noel and her husband Gerry of Lowell, and all his grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua Moody, Jacob Rowe, Hailey, Jameson and Josie Laffey, Emma-Lynn, Alexa and Brayden Isaac as well as his nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visiting hours on Thursday, July 2, from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St. Burlington. His funeral home service will follow at 5:30pm. Burial will be private and at the convenience of his family. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the VFW Post 3719 Scholarship Fund, 20 River St., Winchester, MA 01890.
