Obituary

Dorothy (Perkins) Olson, 88, of Billerica, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 22, surrounded by the love and comfort of those closest to her.

Born in Woburn, Dorothy was one of five children born to the late George B. and Gladys (Jones) Perkins. She was raised in Burlington, where she enjoyed a happy childhood and graduated from Burlington High School.

Following graduation, Dorothy began her career with RCA, a company that would later become part of General Electric. She started in the purchasing department as an administrator, but her ambition and determination quickly set her apart. Taking full advantage of RCA’s employee education benefit, Dorothy enrolled in one college course each year while working full-time. Through years of perseverance and hard work, she earned her bachelor's degree after thirteen years, a remarkable accomplishment that reflected her steadfast commitment to personal and professional growth.

Her education, combined with her exceptional ability to communicate effectively between engineers and sales professionals, earned her promotions within the company. Dorothy became a respected purchasing agent whose talent for bridging technical and business perspectives made her an invaluable member of the organization. Her forty-year career with RCA and GE was one marked by dedication, intelligence, and integrity, providing her with both personal fulfillment and a well-earned, comfortable retirement.

Love found Dorothy in the most unexpected way. What began as a failed double blind date became the start of a lifetime together. When Dorothy's date failed to appear, her girlfriend's date called upon a fellow Airman, Kenneth Olson Jr., to take his place. The impromptu introduction proved to be fate. Dorothy and Kenneth immediately connected, and after Kenneth's honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, the two were married. Together they shared nearly fifty-three wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to one another.

In their younger years, Dorothy and Kenneth enjoyed bowling together and created cherished memories on camping trips that remained favorite stories throughout their lives. Dorothy also believed in keeping both her body and mind active. She enjoyed playing sports with her girlfriends and found endless satisfaction in challenging herself with Sudoku and crossword puzzles. Her television was almost always on, not because she was watching it closely, but because the background noise gave her company while she carefully worked through the next number in a Sudoku puzzle or searched for just the right word to complete a crossword. It was a simple routine that perfectly reflected her thoughtful, analytical nature and her lifelong love of learning.

Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers, Robert and George Perkins.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Kenneth Olson Jr. of Billerica, her siblings, Ginny Martin of Hawaii and Ken Perkins of the Midwest, as well as many nieces and nephews.

At her request, all funeral services will be private and at the convenience of her family.
