David A. Hutchinson, 90, of Arlington, passed away on October 1. He was born in Somerville, the son of the late Charles and Thelma (Cowell) Hutchinson. Raised in Arlington, David attended local schools and graduated from Arlington High School with the Class of 1954.
David was a hardworking and dedicated man who spent more than 40 years as a lineman with Boston Edison and worked briefly for the Littleton Light Department.
David met his wife, Eleanor Carlson, at Trinity Baptist Church when her and her mother were attending a service for a day, he was brave enough to introduce himself to her after a service. Their relationship blossomed, and they were married in October of 1959. The following year, they purchased their home in Burlington, where they built their life together and created countless memories over the years.
He was very active with the Masons for over 50 years and that led to him becoming a member of the Shriners, organizations that provided him with friendships and plenty of adventure. He participated in countless events, parades, and fundraisers, and was always there for the shrine circus and rodeo and especially enjoyed the camaraderie he shared with his fellow members.
His involvement with the Shriners also gave David the opportunity to travel extensively. His trips took him throughout New England and across the United States, as well as to Alaska, California, and destinations throughout Europe, including Holland and Iceland, he was able to travel with his wife and fellow clowns enjoying adventures within every trip, white water rafting in Alaska, enjoying the natural beauty of Holland and visiting the natural springs in Iceland. These experiences combined many of the things David valued most friendship and family, travel, service to others, and being part of something larger than himself.
For all of his travels, David was just as happy enjoying the simple pleasures closer to home. The family cabin in Jackson, New Hampshire, where he could relax and appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the outdoors. He would fish for trout with his son David, socialize with his neighbors in the horse barn up the road, enjoying a beer or two over a couple of hours and spending time with his children, it was a favorite retreat.
At home, David could often be found tending to his backyard garden. Gardening offered him the opportunity to slow down, work with his hands, and take pride in watching the fruits of his labor grow. Whether he was working high above the ground during a raging storm, marching alongside his fellow Shriners, casting a fishing line at Plum Island, traveling to another corner of the world, or quietly tending his yard, David approached life with an adventurous spirit and an appreciation for the people and experiences that filled his years.
Sadly, David was predeceased by his loving wife Eleanor in 2018.
He is survived by his loving children, Sandra Hutchinson of Arlington and David Hutchinson of Sandown, NH., adoring grandchildren, Matthew Hutchinson of Arlington and Owen Hutchinson of Sandown, NH., as well as extended family and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his graveside service on Friday, October 16th at 11Am at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 70 Medford St., Arlington. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association at https://www.alz.org/ or the Shriners Hospital at https://donate.shrinerschildrens.org/ Arrangements are by the Edward V.
