Carol Tolonen, of Burlington and formerly of Wilmington, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. She was the beloved daughter of the late Dorothy (Hannigan) Selig and Paul Hannigan.
Carol was raised and educated in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School. Throughout her working years, she built a successful career with several well-respected companies, including Mitre, Honeywell, and Fox Sports in Woburn, from where she eventually retired. Her strong work ethic and dedication were qualities she carried throughout her life.
Above all else, Carol was a devoted mother and grandmother whose greatest joy came from her family. She was the loving mother of Kristine Catalano of Nashua, NH, and Kimberly Hughes and her husband Christopher, of Georgetown, MA, and the cherished grandmother of seven grandchildren, Bryan, Joseph, Sophia, Alexandra, Ava, Olivia, and Brendan. Nothing brought Carol greater happiness than watching her grandchildren grow, sharing in their lives, and enjoying the special moments that come with being a grandmother. Her love for them was immeasurable, and the memories they created together will remain an important part of her legacy.
Carol will be remembered as a loving and devoted woman who valued the people closest to her. Whether through the relationships she maintained with family or the friendships she formed throughout the years, she leaves behind many who were fortunate to know and love her.
Carol was the former wife of Robert C. Tolonen. She was predeceased by her sister, Sheila Hannigan. She is survived by her brother, David Hannigan and his wife Gracie of Florida; her sister, Sharon Alessandroni and her husband John and their son Jared, of Fountain Hills, Arizona; and her brother, Mark Selig and his wife Karen of Tennessee. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
At her request services will be private for family and close friends. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at www.cff.org, an organization that Carol held near and dear to her heart.
