Carl Magnus Christiansen, age 90, passed away at his home in Burlington on Wednesday, August 12th with his loving family by his side. He was the devoted and adoring husband of Dolores (Kubiack) Christiansen, with whom he had shared over 53 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Woburn, MA on May 29, 1936, he was one of five children to the late Niels H. and Ellen J. (McKee) Christiansen. Carl was raised in Burlington and graduated with the Burlington High School, Class of 1954. He then proudly enlisted in the United States Army where he served honorably overseas in Germany.
Following his military service, Carl joined the Burlington Police Department, where he worked alongside three of his brothers for over 20 years. Together, they were some of the finest police officers the department had ever seen, and they proudly protected and served the town they had always called home. Following his retirement, Carl worked for 15 years for Epsilon as a security officer, and 12 years at Lahey Hospital as a security guard as well.
Carl and his wife Dolores—who he affectionately referred to as “Honey”—raised their family in a home built on love, trust, and mutual support for one another. He was the kind of father and husband that always worked to better himself for his family and his community. In the 1970’s, when Marriage Encounter and Charismatic Renewal began at St. Malachy’s, Carl was an active member, always looking to find ways to love his wife and family to the best of his ability. He was also an active member of St. Malachy’s church where he was a eucharistic minister and did prison ministry through the church as well. He and Dolores were also active members of the Burlington Council on Aging, where the two enjoyed attending socials and weekly Bingo games, and getting together with friends they made there.
Prior to his retirement, he and Dolores owned a motor home that they used to travel together up and down the East Coast. They also had a home in Vero Beach, FL, where they would spent half the year enjoying the sunshine and each other’s company. The two also enjoyed traveling outside the US, visiting places like Ireland, Israel, Poland, Germany and many others.
Carl was known for his fun-loving and easy-going way about him. His sense of humor was second to none, and he was truly gregarious in every sense. No matter where he went, he seemed to make friends and develop bonds through his quick wit and gentle nature. He was famous in the neighborhood for his yearly visits to the children as Santa, where his unexpected arrival brought endless amounts of joy. Above all else, Carl was a one of a kind man who always put his family and loved ones first, who will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
Along with his beloved “Honey”, Dolores, Carl is survived by his adoring children, Stephen Christiansen and his wife Jane of Wareham, Glenn Christiansen and his wife Karen of Pembroke, NH, and Darlene Christiansen and her partner Jody Warriner of Pembroke, NH; his cherished grandchildren, Jarod Legsdin and his wife Amanda, Kelsi Beaudry and her husband Dustin, Nico Christiansen, and Sam Christiansen; his loving great-grandchildren Ulrik, Kole, and Gage, as well as many other dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends. He is also survived by his loving cousin Zofia Swift of Billerica, who’s citizenship he sponsored from Poland.
Carl was the loving brother of the late Kurt, Arnold, Norman, and Paul Christiansen.
Friends and family are invited to attend visitation on Sunday, August 23rd from 2 pm until 5 pm at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington. His Funeral service will begin from the Funeral Home at 9 am, on Monday, August 24th, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 am at St. Malachy Church, 96 Bedford St., Burlington.
