Barbara J. Burgess, age 82, passed away at her home in Burlington on Friday, October 16, 2026.
Born in Norfolk, VA, on January 6, 1944, she was one of two children born to the late Robert J. and Lillie G. (Midyette) Schreiber. Barbara was raised in Burlington, MA, and graduated from Burlington High School with the Class of 1962. She went on to become a research assistant at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston, where she enjoyed a fulfilling career spanning more than 50 years.
In her free time, Barbara enjoyed playing bridge whenever she had the opportunity. Her passion for the game began in childhood, when she played cards with her brother and family, and grew into a lifelong pursuit. Through her dedication and skill, she achieved the distinction of Life Master and competed in numerous tournaments throughout the years. She also enjoyed sharing her knowledge of the game by teaching bridge classes at Cummings Park and in Woburn.
Barbara also enjoyed crocheting and lovingly created many gifts for friends and family, including beautiful, oversized afghans. She had a special fondness for her three Siamese cats and enjoyed watching her favorite television shows and movies, often returning to the same beloved favorites time and again. A devoted New England sports fan, she especially looked forward to cheering on the Patriots and Celtics.
Barbara will be remembered for her strong will, outspoken nature, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved most. Her many interests, lifelong passions, and the memories she created with family and friends will be cherished by all who knew her.
Barbara is survived by her loving brother, James (Rick) Schreiber and his wife Janet of Medway, and her dear friend Diane Jones of Revere.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Barbara’s Funeral Service on Friday, October 23rd at 12 pm at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s honor may be made to The Breast Cancer Association.
