Alan F. Barthelmes, 63, of North Andover, MA, passed away on Thursday, August 6th, after a brief period of failing health.
Born in Winchester, MA, Alan was the beloved son of the late William F. and Elizabeth M. (Mahar) Barthelmes. He was raised in Woburn and graduated from Woburn High School before continuing his education at Salem State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree.
Alan dedicated many years of his working life to the dietary and food service division at The Residence at Salem Woods Assisted Living Facility in Salem, New Hampshire. His work there was much more than simply a job; it was a source of great pride and fulfillment. Alan genuinely cared about the residents he served and became a strong advocate for the senior community. He was a voice for those who needed one, always willing to speak up for the residents he knew and cared about and to make sure they were treated with dignity, kindness, and respect. The relationships he formed with the residents and his fellow staff members were a meaningful part of his life.
Quiet and reserved by nature, Alan was a gentleman who found happiness in the simple things. He remained closely connected to his family and made a point of keeping in touch with those he loved. He was especially thoughtful about birthdays, holidays, and other occasions worth celebrating, often sending a card to let family members and friends know he was thinking of them. Those cards, simple as they may have seemed, were a reflection of Alan's caring nature and the importance he placed on family and friendships.
At home, Alan's beloved cat, Tigger, was his faithful companion. He took great comfort and pleasure in Tigger's company, and the bond they shared brought him much happiness. Alan's quiet demeanor often belied the depth of his caring heart, and those fortunate enough to know him understood that his love was expressed not through grand gestures, but through his thoughtfulness, loyalty, and the small ways he showed that he cared.
Alan will be deeply missed by his brothers, Jim Barthelmes and his wife, Ginger, of Wilbraham, MA, and Stephen Barthelmes of Billerica, MA, and his girlfriend, Mary Meady, of Peabody, MA; his beloved niece and nephew, Kelley and Frank Paige, of Wilbraham, MA, and Kevin and Eleni Barthelmes of Oak Bluffs, MA; his great-nephews, Colin Paige and Ryan Paige of Wilbraham, MA; as well as his many cousins, close friends, and the countless residents and colleagues whose lives he touched throughout his years of service.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Alan's visitation on Wednesday, August 26th, from 9:30 AM until 12:00 PM at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington, MA 01803. His funeral home service will follow the visitation at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alan's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society at Cancer.org or the American Heart Association at Heart.org
