  Herbert J. Rukin, a chef, caterer, and sandwich maker at the Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington entered into rest after a short illness on Thursday night, December 22, 2016. He was 73 years old. Herbert was born in The Bronx, New York, one of two sons born to Louis and Nettie Rukin. He proudly served in the Navy for 6 years during the Vietnam War. He used the skills learned in the Navy to become a chef. He a diverse career including being an excellent caterer. He had worked as a Food Service Director for a number of nursing homes in the area and often worked with patients with dietary restrictions and swallowing disorders. He was currently working at the Lahey Clinic Cafeteria in Burlington until he took ill several weeks ago. He loved his job and bringing a welcomed break and distraction to the employees, patients, and visitors at the hospital.

Herbert was the father of Louise A. Johnson and Robin Rukin both of Hampton, Virginia. He was the brother of the late Michael Rukin. He was the proud grandfather of Marissa and Sasha Johnson of Hampton, Virginia. Graveside services will be held at the Riverside Cemetery, 12 Market Street, Saddle Brook, New Jersey on Monday, December 26, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Herbert’s name may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517 or www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
