  Alexander R. Small, a retired employee of Polaroid Corporation, passed away at the Lahey Clinic Hospital & Medical Center on Sunday, September 6, 2015. The beloved husband of 61 years of Margaret (McNeil) he was 87 years old.

Al was born in Cambridge. He was the son of the late Alexander and Catherine (Brennan) Small. He was raised and educated in Cambridge and Brighton. Al was a veteran of World War II serving his country in the United States Army Air Corps. He achieved the rank of Corporal and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal.

Al and Peg married in 1954. They settled in Woburn where they would raise their three daughters. They stayed in Woburn until 2001 when they moved to Burlington. Al had a successful career working as a Carpenter at Polaroid in Cambridge for over 25 years. He also worked for a short time at the Waltham plant. Al had a love of boating. He was a lifelong member of the Winter Hill Yacht Club in Somerville. He enjoyed saltwater fishing as well as hunting. He owned many different types of boats over the years and made many friends at the Yacht Club. Al and his family had very special memories together, boating throughout the local harbors.

Al’s true passion in his life was his wife Peg, his daughters and grandchildren. Family gatherings and holidays were always a time that he looked forward to. Al was an affectionate man. His family and friends could never say goodbye without receiving a hug and kiss from him. He was very proud to see his six grandchildren grow into adulthood.

Al will be remembered as a devoted husband to Peg for 61 years and a loving Dad to his three daughters and a proud “Pop” to his six grandchildren.

Al was the beloved husband of husband of Margaret (McNeil). He was the loving father of Karen Sciabica of Westford, Janet McGuerty & her husband Brian of Woburn and the late Donna Surette & her husband Kevin of Georgetown. Brother of Shirley Holland of Needham. Proud “Pop” of Nicole & April Surette, Joe & Lia Sciabica and Shawn & Marshall McGuerty.

Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church, 111 Winn St., Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 p.m. Interment in St. Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham.
